4 Important Tourist Sights To See In Bucharest

by Noah Mitchell

The capital of Romania is as beautiful as it is historically important. For first time tourists in Europe, deciding where to go and what to do in Bucharest can be a difficult proposition. Throughout the course of this brief article, you will learn of just a few of the best places to visit during your stay in Bucharest.

Piata Revolutiei

Revolution Square is the sight of many an important battle during the communist uprising. In the very center of the square, you will find the Memorial of Rebirth, which is a monument to those who died during the battle, and which memorializes the rebirth of the country. Take a scroll right across the street from the square and you will see the Central Committee building of the Romanian Communist Party.

Palace of Parliament

The Palace of Parliament stands as the world's biggest parliamentary building. There are guided tours that you can take throughout Palace of Parliament that last upwards of an hour and do not cover a fraction of the space that the building covers. It should be noted that, despite the building's gargantuan size, its construction was never completed, as it was to house the presidential office as well as the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party.

Old City

Old City is the most "historic" of the neighborhoods in Bucharest. These days, however, there is also a vibrant nightlife that is set in Old City. Clubs, bars, and cafes now litter the street in Old City. Old City is now a neighborhood where the old meets the new in a way that is somehow both seamless and interesting.

Art Nouveau

Prior to World War II, Bucharest was often referred to as the "Paris of the east." This is mainly due to the fact that there are plenty of art nouveau architecture pieces in Bucharest. A lot of the old city was destroyed during the Communist rule, but many pieces still exist today. For example, the very center of the city houses the Cismigiu Gardens, with a design that invokes a certain warm, pre-war charm that includes plenty of wrought-iron benches and signage. A replica of the Arc de Triomphe even stands on the north end the Gardens.

Bucharest is a city that is beautiful, interesting, and affordable. This guide should have given you just a small sampling of some of the sights to see in this majestic central European city. Contact a local travel agency to learn more about a Bucharest city tour.
